IRIS VAN HERPEN’S TRANSFORMATION

IRIS VAN HERPEN’S TRANSFORMATION

Iris van Herpen is known for her incredible dimensional work that challenges the norms of traditional fashion. Her seemingly gravity-defying, science-defying and all-around exceptional work almost has to be seen to be believed. The High Museum of Art in Atlanta is doing just that. Iris van Herpen: Transforming Fashion, will display 40 outfits created from 2008-2015.

Dutch Van Herpen perfected her craft at ArtEZ in the Netherlands and in an internship under Alexander McQueen. She launched her eponymous line shortly after graduating from school, to immense success. Since 2011, Van Herpen has been a guest member of the prestigious, and exclusive, Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture in Paris, showing her couture collections biannually every year. She recently moved into ready to wear in 2013, maintaining her unconventional designs on a more mass-market friendly platform.

Truly a pioneer in her field, Van Herpen created some of the world’s first 3-D fashion. Her sculptural, avant-garde creations have been worn by Lady Gaga and Bjork, to name a few, and even outside the theatric, they hold their own as amazing artistic creations. Dresses, like one that looks like thrown water suspended in motion or another that looks like some sort of alien-esque vertebrae, solidify Van Herpen as a designer who truly thinks outside the box. Transforming Fashion seeks to highlight this concept with Van Herpen’s designs. Selected pieces that span her career offer a complete overview of her work and progression through the years. The exhibit will be on view from Nov 7, 2015 to May 15, 2016 at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia.
