PARSON’S GRADUATES

PARSON’S GRADUATES

Tuesday saw the Parsons annual student runway show held at the impressive Javits River pavilion.

A lot of the BFA show this season was very sophisticated, Ethan Han’s black and white number mesmerized as it floated down the catwalk and Kyung Byun’s numbered cut out creations where playful with a clean finish. There was however the odd designer adding some humor. A pair of white platforms covered in stickers, acid-colored knits with huge hoods and cat faces, a rainbow covered coat, and sleeves embroidered with the words “I Am So Fabulous” all added to the excitement of the show.

There was a strong theme running through several collections with futuristic fabric being used in most designs, utilitarian protective-wear was also popping up all over the runway with bold shapes and military style buttons and pockets. Blair Moore took the theme and turned her military esq designs into strong yet feminine looks. A variety of mixed textures where used amongst the students designs, with giant folds of fabric and detailed pleats mixed with interesting pattern cutting.

Some designs where held together with nuts and bolts, while other designs layered netting with beautiful drape and knit. The classic white dress was given a make over with a structured silhouette and plastic panels, while other designers interpreted mens suiting, layering it up to create sleek women’s wear designs.

The show started with a video by Lucy Jones who won the Kering empowering designer award with her conscious designs for seated people. Jones innovative new pattern cutting techniques would allow them to dress without the struggle they now face daily. The actual catwalk then started with some adorable collections for kids!

There were more than 900 people piled into the Javits Convention Center for the show, to watch how the Parsons graduating class found solutions to the problems of the future, quite literally when it come to Lucy Jones’ designs!
