Julian Schnabel: A Private Portrait chronicles this controversial artist’s career from young art world upstart to superstar of the ’80s New York City art scene to his deft transition to award-winning filmmaking.Writer/director Pappi Cosicato’s documentary features Schnabel’s personal home movies and photographs alongside newly shot footage of the artist in studio and at home, revealing a fascinating image of one of contemporary art’s most boisterous and provocative figures.

Since his first solo exhibition at Mary Boone Gallery in 1979, Schnabel has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions: Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (1987); Fundació Joan Miró, Barcelona (1995); Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt (2004); Museo Correr, Venice (2011); Brant Foundation Art Study Center, Greenwich (2013); Museu de Arte de São Paulo, São Paulo (2014); Aspen Art Museum, Aspen (2016), among many others. Schnabel made the films: Basquiat (1996), Before Night Falls (2000), The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007), Berlin (2007) and Miral (2010). His work is included in the public collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Guggenheim Museum, New York and Bilbao; Tate Gallery, London; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris. Julian Schnabel lives and works in New York City and Montauk, Long Island.

Pappi Corsicato was born in Naples in 1960. In 1980 he moved to New York where he studied dance, choreography and acting. Corsicato shot his first movie, Libera, in 1992 and it went on to receive international critical acclaim. His other works include The Vesuvians, Il seme della Discordia, Il volto di un’alrta, and the stage operas “Carmen” and “The Human Voice.”
