7 BLACK was inspired by the 1992 all-black Comme des Garcons collection (which Bill Cunningham photographed) and Edward Gorey’s macabre cartoons (sometimes as eerie backdrops for the Comme des Garcons dresses). BLACK is about darkness, the night, shadows, and what you may or may not see when you squint your eyes. A traditional artist’s portfolio case, tied with three black ribbons, provide the concept for the packaging. The die-cut letters are based on tears made with scrap paper that enabled different first pages to peek through the cover. François Berthoud’s sinister fashion illustrations and 1,500 original hand-made photo collages by young photographer Kristina Colovic, are among the most cherished contributions to this issue.
