56 SOLAR highlights the vibrance of summer. Inside a sleek, all-white case resided an all-white board-bound book featuring an all-white embroidered bird by Roe Ethridge. The book features artworks by Alex Katz, Peter Lindbergh, Ryan Mcinley, and David Sims — each printed using breakthrough color-changing inks. When viewed indoors or under artificial light, the issue, sponsored by Calvin Klein Collection, was completely stark in its black & whiteness. When exposed to direct sunlight, however, the artworks reacted to UV rays and bloomed into full color — and inspired actual items of clothing, too. Calvin Klein Collection’s Francisco Costa and Italo Zucchelli produced women’s and men’s pieces, respectively, made of fabric dipped in the same color-changing inks.
